Working with athletes
for the atlethes

Lapo Becherini considers the human athlete no longer as a sum of two factors, mind and body , as it’s conventionally recognized, but rather as a whole, hyper-complex structure. That’s what generates the need to rethink the human athlete as a jigsaw puzzle where each piece is essential and integrally connected to the others to coalesce into the whole picture that is the full development of the human athlete.

Thanks to his multidisciplinary working experiences and his educational paths, and more specifically to the master's degree in"profesional en Alto Rendimiento en Deportes de Equipo" earned in Spain, Lapo Becherini developed an unique approach of the strength and power training, applicable to any athlete of any discipline. According to Lapo, the injury prevention training should be developed through an integrated proposal that focuses on sport-specific strength training.

The person
before the athlete

The first step consists in testing. That helps drive physical preparation strategies to improve performance and mitigate injury risk. It forms a key component of the need’s analysis and the assessment of the individual. Investigating and understanding the proper physical demands and key performance indicators of the sport practiced by the athlete helps driving fitness testing and selection. The final goal is to develop an integrated proposal that does not aim to improve an individual conditional capacity, as the improvement process must be a unique integrated system.

The second step takes place in developing the training structure and the training/competition cycle, which will be aligned with the athlete's schedule and goals. Developing long-terms goals xrequires detailed micro-cycles, involving several short terms-goals to track the process. Every detail will be arranged in accordance with the athlete and the staff.

The third step consists in putting the plan into practice, starting from what has emerged during the previous steps. It will be key to avoid the athlete’s adaptation process by always applying a new, different, distinct stimulus within the sport practiced, applying modifications to the following micro-cycle. With this adaptation the improvement process, which involves continuous problem solving by the athlete who is facing unique and different situations during the training sessions and/or competitions, comes to an end.

The fourth step includes the monitoring of the internal and external workload, along with optimization of the recovery process. The aim is to give the athlete the skills to feel confident in giving his all for an entire match, whatever the sport practiced. The main goal is to improve on a daily basis, keeping an eye on the performance level showed during each competition. In case the athlete has a multidisciplinary staff, it will be important to establish a constant dialogue with open feedback and evaluation, in order to optimize the integrated training proposal.

It’s essential to know and
understand the physical
demands and key performance
indicators of the sport
